How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

When a woman becomes pregnant, she produces a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). As the hormone builds in her body, it enters her blood and urine stream. If the pregnancy test detects hCG in your urine, you are most likely pregnant.

When Should I Take A Pregnancy Test?

The Mayo Clinic recommends waiting a day or two after your missed period to take the test. If your menstrual cycle is irregular, you should give it more time. The longer you wait, the more accurate the results will be.

Make sure you take the test correctly.

  • Check the expiration date
  • Wait the appropriate number of days before testing
  • Take the test first thing in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated
  • Follow the test directions for how long to wait before checking the results
  • If the test is negative, but your period still hasn’t started, test again
